my hair story and previous twist hair routine

My hair. Throughout my life I have had one thing about myself that seems to attract attention, many questions, and much stress. When I was younger I had shiny ringlets of golden brown hair. As I grew my hair began to darken and grow extremely long. When I was younger my hair was my mother’s responsibility so I had no major control of it. In third grade I decided to cut my extremely long hair and donate it to locks of love. Then I decided in sixth grade to go even shorter and make it into a fro in my attempt to look like singer Corrine Balliey Ray. It was a disaster.
Ever since then my hair has never been the same it grew back frizzier and the thickness seemed to only be worse. For the most part I wore my hair in a bun or pony tail unless it was straightened. Through out most of middle school until now my search for finding the perfect hair care routine has evolved in hopes that it can be perfected. These are some techniques and tricks that people with curly hair can use to help manage their hair.
For people with curly your hair is already naturally dry and knotty. The most important thing to do when you get in the shower is condition first with Treseme conditioner. This helps detangle the hair so the shampoo can easily penetrate to the root and protect it from damage especially if your are not using a sulfate and paraben free shampoo. I use the Moses soothing elixir to cleanse my hair every two days. After that I apply the Moses soothing elixir hair mask which I leave in for about 5 or 8 minutes and with a wide tooth comb, comb your hair out. Always comb the ends of your hair first to stop breaking from the root. After I rinse that out I apply coconut oil and wrap my hair in an old t-shirt or pashmena to dry (never use a towel that will cause frizz and breaking).
After, if my hair is feeling dry I add some Moroccan oil or Chi leave in conditioner. Then I will take a blow dryer and put the diffuser attachment on. The diffuser is key to apply an even amount of heat and it helps the curls stay intact and shiny. Once your hair is dry you can spritz shine spray unless you have hair like mine and you need an extra something to avoid the puffiness. I split my hair into three sections and make them into braids. This will tame the curls and the final dying stage will be controlled.
Another tactic I use if I want more defined spirals is the same shower routine except I do not use a wide tooth comb I use my fingers to detangle my hair which to reduce chance of breakage and changing your curl pattern. Then I dry my hair with an old t-shirt or pashmena. I then re -wet my hair with cold water which helps the curls stick together again and close up the pores and roots on my scalp that opened from the steam n the shower. This also helps prevent major frizz and makes the hair easier to style. Then I take a small section of hair and separate it into 2 and twist them together. Continue this with small sections around your head until you have twisted your hair. You can also control how big or small you want to make your hair by the amount of hair you twist together. Once you have your twists if you can put them in braids and let them dry and sleep on them. If you are going somewhere then u can use the diffuser grabbing a few twists at a time and bringing them towards your head to have it dried from root to tip.
Once your hair is dry you gently untwist your hair and give it a little shake. The more you move and shake your curls the loser they will be. I like to spray some hair spray on my finger tips and run my finger through my roots and lift upwards to add volume. Then to add shine to the ringlets you can spritz some shine spray. I recommend the Bumble and Bumble shine on finishing spray. After you have mastered your perfect ringlets you can style as you wish.
It takes a while to find out the perfect routine for your hair because not curl pattern it alike and with a various amount of textures and thicknesses people have curls become something you must personalize. The main thing is to find your routine by taking tips and tricks from blogs, videos, and your stylist. The most important thing is to take good care of your hair. Ever since I was little I wanted straight hair and people with straight hair wanted my hair but as they say the grass is always greener on the other side.
Instead of damaging your hair with relaxers that can cause hair loss and straightening your hair daily until it breaks off, embrace the natural hair you are given. It may take a while to find out what works for you but always be on the look for new techniques.

Think Before You Speak

Have you ever had someone point out a "flaw" that you never really thought about to much? Has anyone ever pointed out a "flaw" that you already knew about but hoped no one would ever point out? If you answered no to any of those questions then I'm guessing you did not go to school. As much as I wish that we could all go about our lives not having to experience the cruelty of someone’s words but in reality it is hard to escape. Even if you do not classify a comment as bullying it can still do a lot of damage, especially to someone who is young.
You may be thinking "what so now I basically can't speak because it might hurt someone’s feelings"? My answer to you is no. Just before you say something that involves someone’s appearance stop and ask yourself these questions:
  • Would I want someone saying this to me?
  • Is whatever I want to say really worth upsetting someone?
  • Would they already know about what I’m going to point out? (believe it or not most people own a mirror)
  • Is what I’m going to point out, out of their control? (that is the worst when someone points out something you can't change)

The point of this post is just to help people realize that saying certain things like calling someone ugly or fat can really affect people and I know firsthand. If you have ever had someone say something to you always remember that they are most likely hurting themselves. But to break the cycle of that behavior I give two compliments for every insult I get. You never know how your compliment can change someone’s life and it becomes a chain reaction. Try to never let anyone make you feel insecure because no one is perfect (even Beyonce has under eye circles). Just because your definition of beautiful is different from someone else’s does not mean that there is not beauty in everyone. Always remember to think before you speak and that someone finds you beautiful.

To Prime or Not To Prime?: Face Primers

Purpose: create a lasting base for makeup, ensure a smooth application of foundation, and decrease the look of fine lines and pores.

To prime or not to prime that is the question. For someone like me who wears some sort of foundation or concealar almost every day and is a freak about having a smooth surface a apply makeup on you think would use a face primer. But sadly I skip this product unless I know that I’m going to be in a situation where I’ll sweat makeup off my face or ill be leaving the house early and coming home super late and don’t want to look in the mirror and see my blush dripping down my face (slight exaggeration). I do have oily skin and priming would be beneficial but my favorite primers are quite pricey and I like to save them for when I really want my skin looking its best.

Personally I choose to skip primers because I know that if my make up looked better longer I would keep it on longer. But when trying to nurse my problematic skin to health means that the minute I’m alone and changed into sweats the makeup comes off. If I leave makeup on too long my oily skin almost breaks down the makeup and my large pores begin to come through. It sounds pretty gross but it is a good reminder when it’s time to wash my face off.

Overall primer is your choice, I know many people with relatively dry and smooth skin do not use primer I also know many people who do use primer daily. I reccamend to always have a primer on hand just in case but it’s up to you how often you use it.

IMPORTANT MESSAGE: Even if you do not use primer, have a skin care routine that involves some sort of serum, toner or moisturizer that you can wear under your makeup because your skin does need to be prepped and you never want to apply just makeup to the face, you want a good foundation for your foundation. (Preferably one that is well moisturized!)

   Primer Tips:
·         -Know your ingredients: if you are using a water based foundation use a water based primer and if you are using a silicon based foundation use a silicon based primer. If you mix silicon and water the primer will not be doing its job and your makeup will not stick and stay as long as it could.
·         -Try before you buy: just like foundations primers are no different you should always be able to sample the product (especially if it cost more than the shirt your wearing). You never know how you skin will react to a product or if it truly works with your specific foundation.
·        - Be on top: instead of using a primer use a  makeup setting spray. This can help reduce the over powdered look and claims to do the same things as your primer. Urban Decay makes really good setting sprays that last.

·         -Use what you have: if you own any BB or CC creams they have built in primers so you can use that under your makeup for more coverage and the same priming affect.

My favorite primers:

Smashbox Photo Finish Foundation Primer $36 at Sephora

Benefit “that gal” brightening face primer $29 at Sephora

*budget buy* NYX Shine Killer $13 at Nordstrom
